HAITI: POVERTY
Billy and I travelled to Haiti in conjunction with the charity Scottish International Relief (now Mary’s Meals) to witness the horrendous conditions people endure in a slum called Cite Soleil, in the nation’s capital city, Port Au Prince. We gained unprecedented access to the armed gang leaders who are at war with the UN and spent a week with a community that is desperate for peace. Despite the squalor and poverty, the children are spotless as they are readied for school. Witchcraft is endemic, Haitian voodoo (meaning spirit) is the dominant religion. Sacrifices are made ie sanctified chicken. Participants then ask for help with problems, health for example.

Haiti is one of the world’s forgotten crises.
