PJAK - was formed in 2004 and is linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK, the separatist group based in Turkey.
The Qandil Mountains are a mountainous area of northern Iraq near the Iraq–Iran border, and approximately 50 km south of the Turkey–Iraq–Iran tripoint. They provide sanctuary for PJAK.
PJAK, which calls for autonomy for Iran's minority Kurds, is regularly targeted by Iranian forces.
